NEW YORK (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - A New York family bought a bowl at a yard sale for three dollars, but that wouldn't be much of a story, were it not for what happened next.

The owner put it up in their house as a decoration for years, but after some time became curious about where it came from.

It turns out it's a thousand-year-old Chinese bowl and is actually quite rare.

It's called the ding bowl and is an example of northern Song Dynasty pottery.

It was just sold at an auction for $2.2 million.
