Colo. lawmakers consider toughening insanity plea

Updated: Thursday, February 7 2013, 12:23 AM EST
COLORADO (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Lawmakers in Colorado are considering making it tougher for defendants to be found not guilty by reason of insanity.

The debate is prompted in part by last summer's movie theater massacre.

Under current standards in Colorado, prosecutors have to prove that a defendant is sane.

A proposal in the state legislature would require defense lawyers to prove the defendant is insane with clear and convincing evidence.
