NEW JERSEY (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Five firefighters are recovering after an explosion while they were battling an apartment fire in New Jersey.

Investigators believe a backdraft caused the explosion.

Officials say that's caused when the fire has a lack of oxygen and then a door or window opens, allowing oxygen to come rushing back in.

No one living in the building was injured, although the fire destroyed several apartments.

Investigators believe the fire started in a kitchen area of the building.
