BOCA GRANDE, Fla. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Throwing a birthday party for your boss sounds like a good idea, but not after he finds out that you've embezzled thousands of dollars from his company.
Such is the case of Ruth Amen, the now former Office Manager for a Florida real estate company in Boca Grande.
According to the Sun Sentinel, Amen had been the Office Manager for Gulf to Bay Realty for more than 10 years.
During this time, she was solely responsible for keeping track of the company's finances, including payroll and billing.
After throwing a surprise birthday party for her boss, though, which Amen organized without permission from higher-ups, company leaders took a closer look at the books.
Amen is accused of embezzling more than $180,000.
She has been charged with grand theft and scheme to defraud.
Both are first-degree felonies.
