Hearings underway on military sexual misconduct

Updated: Wednesday, March 13 2013, 08:29 PM EDT
WASHINGTON, D.C. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - There are 3,000 reports of sexual misconduct among armed forces service members every year.

The Defense Department says that most attacks go unreported, however, and that the actual number is closer to 19,000.

Today, the Senate held its first hearing on sexual assaults in the military in nearly a decade.

Victims told their stories to lawmakers, describing their fears about coming forward and testified about widespread sexual misconduct of all types.

The Senate panel is looking for ways to change the law to help victims get justice.
