Jury recommends death penalty for '88 Calif. rape, murder

ORANGE COUNTY, Calif. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - A jury has recommended the death penalty for a man who murdered a pregnant woman nearly a quarter century ago in California, and raped a different woman in West Michigan.

Investigators say 42-year-old Jason Balcom attacked 22-year-old Malinda Gibbons in her Costa Mesa, Calif. apartment in 1988.

She was bound, gagged, and raped, and her husband found her body when he returned from work.

Balcom has a lengthy criminal history, as he was convicted of raping two different women in the days after Gibbons was killed, one in California, and another in Battle Creek.
