CONNECTICUT (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Lawmakers in Connecticut have approved what many are calling the toughest gun laws in the country.
That wide-ranging legislation is in response to the tragic mass shooting in Newtown.
It bans the sales of large-capacity ammo magazines and also bans sales of more than 100 weapons that previously had been legal.
Governor Dannel Malloy plans to sign it into law Thursday.
Some of the measures will take effect right away. Those include expansion of the state's assault weapons ban, background checks for all firearms sales and a ban on the sale or purchase of magazines that hold more than 10 rounds.
The bill also addresses mental health and school security measures.
