(NEWSCHANNEL 3) - In Britain, a judge sentenced a mother and father to prison for starting a fire that killed six of their children.
Prosecutors say Mick and Maired Philpott planned to start a fire, rescue their sleeping children, and pin the blame on a former mistress to win a child custody battle.
But the fire was bigger than planned and burned out of control.
Police say it was neighbors, not the parents, who tried in vain to rescue the children.
In the following days, the Philpotts cried in front of news cameras, but officers were suspicious.
Police then bugged their hotel room as the couple worked on their cover story.
The children, between the ages of 5 and 13, were buried in six small caskets last May.
Maired Philpott received 17 years in prison for her role, and Mick received life.
He had a total of 17 children with 5 women.
