New invention could help stop drunk drivers

Updated: Tuesday, March 19 2013, 08:30 PM EDT
(NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Had too much to drink? Not sure? Soon, your smartphone may be able to figure out if you're too drunk to drive.

A Silicon Valley company called Breathometer is working on a small machine that plugs into your phone.

You blow into it, and the phone will tell you what your breath-alcohol concentration is.

It doesn't just tell you how drunk you are, either, it also gives you choices--call a cab or call a friend.

"The focus for us is to reduce as many drunk driving accidents as there are, and ultimately potentially even save lives," said Breathometer CEO Charles Michael Yim.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, more than 10,000 people die every year from drunk driving accidents.

The company says they have already received 3,000 orders in the past 5 days.
