NEW YORK (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - A New York state lawmaker and several other politicians have been arrested in an alleged plot to rig the New York City Mayoral race.
Federal authorities say Democratic State Senator Malcolm Smith tried to pay off some New York City Republican Party bosses to put himself on the ballot as a Republican.
Smith and City Councilman Dan Halloran were arrested early Tuesday morning at their homes.
Several other lawmakers are also charged.
The prosecutor says charges in the case include bribery, extortion, and wire and mail fraud.
