Senators spar over proposed weapons bill

Updated: Wednesday, February 27 2013, 11:33 PM EST
WASHINGTON, D.C. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Senators are arguing the merits of a proposed weapons bill.

It's being proposed by Senator Dianne Feinstein of California, and it would ban assault weapons and high-capacity magazines.

Wednesday, the father of a first-grader killed in the Newtown, Conn. mass shooting begged the Senate Judiciary Committee to ban assault weapons--he told the heartbreaking story of losing his son.

The 50-year-old construction worker said he supports the second amendment right to bear arms, and backs sportsmen who use firearms.

But he added that the Second Amendment wasn't written at a time when firearms were as sophisticated as today's assault weapons.

Republicans at the hearing said the ban could violate the Constitution.
