(NEWSCHANNEL 3) - For the first time, the United States will directly aid rebel forces in Syria, giving $60 million in international aid, along with food rations and medical supplies.

Secretary of State John Kerry announced the additional aid today in Rome while at an international conference on Syria.

He said the decision is designed to increase pressure on Syria's long-time dictator, President Bashar Assad to step down.

The U.S. also hopes the aid will help the rebels counter some of the Islamic radicals who have gained power since the fighting began.
