BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - A woman and two of her children are in serious condition Monday morning after being crushed by an airport sign.
A third son was killed Friday when the electronic board, weighing at least 300 pounds, fell at the Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport in Alabama.
The family was on its way home to Kansas after a week-long vacation in Florida.
One of the boys was released this weekend with a concussion.
The other is being treated for a broken nose and leg.
The children's mother is in serious condition, and still unconscious.
"On behalf of the entire Birmingham-Shuttlesworth Airport Authority, first of all, I'd like to extend our heartfelt sympathy to the family of the child who passed following the accident Friday at the Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport," said spokesperson Gaynelle Hendricks. "Our prayers are for the young child and his family, especially those who are continuing to recover from this unfortunate event."
After the sign fell, it took six people to lift the large board, and a dozen people to hold it up while first responders administered aid.
"The family was crushed," reported Larry Snyder, a witness. "The little kids crushed underneath the sign and everybody was scattering to lift it up. I helped lift it up and helped pull people out."
The crash happened at a concourse that had just been renovated as part of a $200 million upgrade.
The company behind the construction says it's working with airport authorities to determine why the sign fell.
