Utility: Gas leak may have caused fatal blast

Updated: Friday, March 1 2013, 09:03 AM EST
ROYAL OAK, Mich. (AP) - A utility says gas leaking from a line serving a suburban Detroit house may have caused an explosion that killed the 58-year-old man who lived there.

State and local officials are investigating the cause of Wednesday's blast, which leveled the house and damaged several others in Royal Oak.

An autopsy is scheduled Friday for Daniel Malczynski (mal-ZIN'-skee) of Royal Oak.

Consumers Energy says its crews had been working several days to replace a natural gas main on the street.

In a statement, the CMS Energy Corp. subsidiary says a gas line to the house was damaged "and was the possible cause of the explosion."

National Transportation Safety Board spokesman Peter Knudson says the Michigan Public Service Commission will investigate and report its findings back to the board.
