At least 2 crashes backing up traffic on I-94 in Portage

Updated: Friday, July 25, 2014

PORTAGE, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Traffic was backed up for miles at Friday morning after at least two separate crashes on I-94.

According to Portage Police, a passenger vehicle collided with a semi just before 8:00 a.m., before leaving the road and striking a retaining wall.

Shortly thereafter, a second crash occurred involving two passenger vehicles, reportedly due to so-called rubber necking on the road.

The accidents occurred just west of Portage Road and Lovers Lane in the east bound lanes, resulting in traffic being backed up all the way to Westnedge.

Two victims were taken to a local hospital by ambulance for non-life threatening injuries.

Newschannel 3 has been told that a pregnant woman was in one of the vehicles. She was not injured but is being checked out as a precaution.

Police say she was treated and released.

The highway was down to just one lane, and Portage Public Safety is advising people to avoid the area and seek alternative routes.
