KALAMAZOO, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - A local woman is leading the drive to improve literacy in some of Kalamazoo's neediest children.

Those at the Kalamazoo Gospel Mission tell us August is their busiest month for families. They see more kids coming in during this time than any other over the year.

It's those statistics that prompted a local woman to take action.

Jessica Sackett is an Usborne Books Educational Consultant and foster parent.

She tells us the mission typically sees about 100 kids in their programs around this time of year.

She started a book drive to make sure that every kid there gets a book of their own and in the process you can get one for your own family.

"To be see children who have gone through traumas or maybe aren't in the best situation right now get lost in a book, or be able to find a way out of the situation or rally just be able to do something is amazing," said Sackett. "To have a book of their own that they can truly say this is mine is really important."

The goal is to have 100 books at the mission by Wednesday.

Sackett has a Facebook page set up and all you have to do is buy a book through Usborne for your own child and one will be donated to the mission.
