KALAMAZOO, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) – A 93-year-old woman from Kalamazoo has become an inspiration to people of all ages for her skills out on the dance floor.

Tenho Connable will be competing at a ballroom dancing competition in Las Vegas next week.

Even though she’s older than every other dancer, she makes it look easy.

“I think it's the music,” Connable says. “You just want to move to it.”

When she was in her late 80s, an age when most people let their passions slip away, Connable started taking ballroom lessons at Sharon’s Dance Studio in Kalamazoo.

Connable explains, “A 93-year-old widow is not going to be asked to go out social dancing. And I do love to dance.”

Sharon’s Dance Studio owner Sharon Fisher says, “At 93, doing dances like Viennese waltz and quickstep? It’s absolutely fantastic. I love it. I told her when I grow up I want to be just like her.”

Connable glides through steps that would be tough for people half her age.  And when it comes to competing, she's no stranger to first place.

She laughs, “I am often the only one in my age category! So that takes a little but of the fun out of first. But I do get a first!”

A body that's nearly a century old can't keep the sparkle out of her eye or the dancing shoes off her feet.

“There’s no such thing as ‘can’t.’ If you want to do something, get out there and you do it,” Fisher says.

“It’s the one thing I really get pleasure in. I’ve tried different exercises and they’re not near as much fun as dancing.” Connable smiles and quickly adds, “Everybody should dance.”

Her ballroom dancing is just another accomplishment to an already impressive resume.  Tenho Connable was actually one of the first women to graduate from the University of Michigan with a degree in engineering.
