WEST MICHIGAN (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - A State member of the Republican National Committee is being asked to step down after posting part of an article criticizing the lifestyles of gay people on his Facebook page.
Former State Representative Dave Agema came under fire on Wednesday after posting the article entitled "Everyone should know these statistics on homosexuals."
The article, by an author identifying his or herself as Dr. Frank Joseph, calls gays and lesbians "promiscuous," "riddled with sexually transmitted diseases," and says they're typically substance abusers.
Now at least 21 Michigan Republicans are calling for Agema's resignation, calling the article "deplorable and indefensible."
Michigan Speaker of the House Jase Bolger said that emotions are high as the U.S. Supreme Court considers cases involving same-sex marriage.
He released a statement Thursday which concluded: "Though maybe nothing gets more emotional than the intersection of personal beliefs and politics, I urge all sides to conduct their debate with a focus on the facts and a respect for individuals. I refuse to seek to advance a political cause by demonizing people who believe differently than me. I hope others will also display respect for different and deeply held beliefs."
Newschannel 3 reached out to Dave Agema for comment, but he didn't return our calls.
However, he told the Detroit Free Press that some people are casting words from other people as his own.
He says he believed the article was worth posting because of the landmark gay rights cases before the Supreme Court at this time.
