(NEWSCHANNEL 3) - A new internet based company is offering some relief to pet owners that may not be able to afford to keep their animals.

It's called Pet Food Stamps. The new non-profit organization offers qualifying pet owners throughout the U.S. funds to buy food for their animals through the website petfooddirect.com.

Recipients must show that they are on government assistance. The program is free for those who are approved.

The creator, Mark Okon, says they have already fielded more than 12,000 applications in just the first two weeks.

He says the program is designed to prevent people from having to choose feeding themselves or their animals.

Shelters hope it will cut down on over-crowding from people having to surrender their pets.
