OSHTEMO TOWNSHIP, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - West Michigan car dealerships are making changes after they were targeted by thieves last week.

Newschannel 3's Jessica Harthorn talked to DeNooyer Chevrolet about how they broke in, and what they're motive could be.

Last Saturday morning, the used car manager at DeNooyer Chevrolet took these photos after he says a teen took a rock and broke through this office window.

"It looks like he looked through the window and saw the keys on the desk and took a rock," business manager Ryan DeNooyer says. "It wasn't thrown very well through there because there was blood and everything on the glass."

Two keys were taken off the desk and two Chevy Cruzes were stolen off the lot. DeNooyer says it's the first car theft they've had in over a decade and other dealerships were hit too.

"Orin B. Hayes had some stolen as well too," DeNooyer says.

The next night, Kalamazoo Public Safety Officers discovered a stolen Jeep, driving on Ann St., when they attempted to pull it over. Four people inside jumped out and ran.

"What we believe is that there is some gang initiation, that some of the gang leaders are pinpointing some younger people who are under 18 and are minors, because they don't get prosecuted to the extent of the law as someone who was an adult," DeNooyer says.

DeNooyer Chevrolet has now tightened up their security policies to prevent future break-ins.

He says police have recovered both Chevy Cruzes. So far, they have arrested at least three people.DeNooyer: Car thefts may be gang-related
