OTTAWA COUNTY, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Investigators are looking into what caused a devastating fire that destroyed an Ottawa County home and killed two pets.
The Park Township Fire Department was called to a home in the 1,700 block of Lakewood Boulevard around 11pm Wednesday night but they say the fire had been burning for some time.
Captain Scott Heerma tells Newschannel 3 the family who lives there is away on spring break and the home is set far off the road. He says no one noticed the flames until they were shooting well above the trees.
A portion of the home collapsed because of the intense flames which took more than an hour to get under control.
"It appears to me that this is going to be a total loss." Heerma said, "There was fire throughout the complete house and the damage appears to make it a total loss."
Fire crews did recover the remains of two family dogs.
Captain Heerma says they will be back on the scene Thursday morning to look through the rubble to determine what sparked the fire.
