GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Monday would have been the 95th birthday of First Lady Betty Ford.
To celebrate her birthday two first ladies are making a special visit to Grand Rapids.
Barbara and Laura Bush will be at the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Foundation and Museum for “America's First Ladies: An Enduring Legacy" conference.
The day long event will examine the role of the first lady and celebrate Mrs. Ford's birthday.
Executive Director of the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Foundation Joe Calvaruso spoke with Newschannel 3 about the role of the first lady.
"I think the first lady's role has been over looked for a lot of years and they're very significant. Now the initiatives they pick up and how they interact with the America public. Take for example Mrs. Ford. Her initiative on breast cancer awareness has saved thousands of lives throughout the country and made it an issue we can talk about," said Calvaruso.
That conference will take place Monday at the J.W. Marriott Hotel starting at noon followed by a symposium at 3:00 at the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum Auditorium.
Susan Ford Bales and Steven Ford will also be in attendance talking about their mother and her role as a first lady through their eyes.
