OAKLAND, California (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - A new trial in California over lead warnings in baby food could have national implications.
The Environmental Law Foundation in Oakland is suing Gerber, Del Monte and many other baby food makers.
Both sides agree baby foods containing carrots, peaches, pears and sweet potato have some lead, but the food companies say the levels are so low, they fall below the FDA's warning standards.
The suit claims the companies are violating California's Proposition 65. Passed in 1986, it requires a clear listing of all cancer causing agents regardless of level.
