KENT COUNTY, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) – A preliminary hearing for the man accused of killing a Kentwood couple was delayed Wednesday when he refused to leave his jail cell.
Javonte Higgins was supposed to have a preliminary hearing Wednesday on charges of auto theft, home invasion and fleeing police.
Those charges date back to an incident in December when Higgins allegedly crashed a stolen truck.
That hearing was delayed when jail officials say Higgins refused to leave his cell.
That prompted the judge to conduct the hearing by video recorder and rule that Higgins be sent away for a psych exam.
Higgins is accused of killing David and Vivian Bouwman in their Kentwood home in January.
