GRANDVILLE, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) – A death investigation is underway after police found a missing Grandville woman dead.
Newschannel 3 was on the scene Tuesday night when Mary Tornga’s body was pulled from the Grand River near I-196 and Market Avenue.
Kayakers on the river reported spotting the body around 8:00 pm.
51-year-old Mary Tornga had last been seen in that same area early Sunday morning. Now family and friends who had been searching for her are now struggling to come to terms with her death.
Julie Schmitt remembers the day her little sister was born.
“She was my first living doll I ever had,” said Schmitt, “I was nine years old when she was born.”
Schmitt never thought she’d one day be remembering when she found out that her little sister was dead.
“I was blindsided, I couldn’t breathe, I was in shock,” said Schmitt.
Schmitt says Mary was loved by everyone who knew her.
“She was my heart,” said Schmitt, “there was nothing that I could not tell her and there was nothing she couldn’t tell me.”
Currently police are searching the area where Tornga’s body was found, hoping to find answers for her family.
But for Schmitt it’s not about what happened; it’s about knowing that Mary is in a better place.
“Of course when something like this happens there’s thoughts and feelings that go through your head and heart, my little baby sister,” said Schmitt, “but I know that God had her, he’s always had her.”
Police are still waiting on some test results as they continue to investigate but at this point it is believed that Tornga drowned.
