KALAMAZOO, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) – Deputies in Kalamazoo County continue to search for a trained cage fighter accused of brutally beating his girlfriend.
The suspect, 41-year-old Arthur “Art” Payne, is considered dangerous.
The attack happened last Thursday at the Andover Apartments in Oshtemo Township.
According to the victim’s family, the couple’s 9-year-old son woke up to the sound of screaming.
The boy then called a neighbor for help, telling her there was blood everywhere.
The neighbor says she found Janssen missing chunks of hair and teeth and her face was purple and swollen.
The Kalamazoo County Undersheriff tells NewsChannel 3, when they got to the scene, they discovered one of the worst cases of domestic violence they’ve ever seen.
The victim, 33-year-old Stephanie Janssen, is still in the hospital with severe head and face injuries.
Janssen has since been upgraded from critical to serious condition.
NewsChannel 3 did some digging and found Arthur Payne's Facebook page, which appears to show no remorse for the attack and instead blames others, likely the victim, for trying to bring him down.
On Saturday, two days after the beating, he posted this: “What if someone attempted to take your life while u lay in bed (dude or dame).... What would u do? Some people do not want to see u succeed even if its the one u love the most. We almost made it kazoo now it looks like its all over for me. Whoever else is trying to make it to the top be careful of who is around u!"
Janssen's family says they do not know the exact events of the night because Stephanie has no memory of it. And they won't feel safe until Payne is caught.
“It’s just hard, it’s really hard as a parent,” says Stephanie’s mother Alice Janssen. “It’s emotionally draining. My daughter needs to know there will be safety.”
The neighbor we spoke with adds this about Payne: “You can just look at his picture and see there's evil in his eyes.”
Arthur Payne’s family has a history of violence.
His brother, David Payne, is serving a life sentence for murdering two video store clerks in Kalamazoo in 1994.
Again, police are still looking for Arthur Payne and say he is considered dangerous.
If you see him, call 911 immediately.
