KALAMAZOO, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - After more than a week investigating the tragic fire at Interfaith apartments, police say they still have plenty of unanswered questions.

What investigators do know is that the fire was started accidentally on the first floor--not in the kitchen, but in the living room area.

It then was made worse when a neighbor opened the front door trying to rescue the kids trapped inside.

"It quickly burned an area which caused the whole apartment to fill up with heated gases and smoke and eventually the person when they opened the door in an attempt to rescue the kids, that caused an influx of oxygen which caused a flashover of the apartment," said Assistant Public Safety Chief Brian Uridge.

Witnesses reported hearing an explosion before the fire, but KDPS has determined that was actually the flashover during the fire.

But investigators still have several questions, and the answers may determine if there will be criminal charges for the mother of the children or others involved.

"What's still under investigation is the amount of time, where exactly the four year old child was located at," Uridge said. "We're still interviewing many people trying to compare stores, we're had some additional people come forward and give us additional information which changed the focus a little bit," Uridge said.

A visitation will be held for 3-year-old twins Tevin and Te'niya Williams and their 1-year-old sister Ty'onna Henderson.

It will be from 5 to 7 Friday night at Whitley Memorial Funeral Home on North Westnedge.

A funeral service will be held Saturday at noon, at Mount Zion Baptist Church.UPDATED: Investigators release details from fatal apartment fire investigation
