KALAMAZOO, Mich. (AP) - Western Michigan University's College of Aviation is teaming up with an American Airlines affiliate on a pilot-hiring program designed to benefit the school and airline.
The Battle Creek-based aviation college and American Eagle Airlines made the announcement Friday. They say it's the first agreement of its kind in the nation.
American Eagle plans to identify potential employees as early as their sophomore year and work with them through graduation. Those selected then will become airline employees while they are loaned to the college as flight instructors.
Pilots will step into a new hiring class at American Eagle once the required flight hours are reached. They will receive a scholarship and be guaranteed an interview with the airline.
Students must meet certain academic and legal requirements.
