KALAMAZOO, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - A warrant has been issued in a cold Kalamazoo murder case.
Kalamazoo Public Safety announced Tuesday that a warrant has been issued for 43-year-old Grady Shields, Jr. for felony murder and open murder, in the 1993 death of 59-year-old Lois Cox.
Cox and her vehicle disappeared on October 20th, 1993, from the 900 block of Staples Street in Kalamazoo.
Her body was discovered in her car six days later in the 300 block of S. Main St. in Three Rivers.
Kalamazoo Public Safety, Three Rivers Police, and the St. Joseph County Sheriff's Department all investigated the case, along with the Michigan State Police, but it eventually went cold.
Shields was identified as a suspect in 2005, by which time he was serving a sentence for armed robbery, among other charges, stemming from an incident just weeks after Cox's death.
In 2012, however, Three Rivers and Kalamazoo police began a joint investigation.
On Monday, the Kalamazoo County Prosecutor's Office issued the warrant against Shields, who is currently serving his sentence in an unrelated crime.
He will be transported to Kalamazoo to be arraigned on the charges on April 24th.
Anyone with any additional information surrounding the incident is asked to contact the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety Criminal Investigation Division at (269)337-8139, or to contact Silent Observer.
