KALAMAZOO, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Laura Bolen's miniature schnauzer Oreo is getting some extra praise and attention, because it was Oreo who let Bolen know something was wrong when she walked into her house Thursday morning.
"He started barking immediately, which he never does unless there's a stranger around. So he ran downstairs which John thought was suspicious so he followed the dog down there. In the meantime I found a whole bunch of milk bones in his crate, which I though was really weird because I don't even have milk bone brand treats," says Bolen.
Oreo ran to the closet where she says a man with a knife and duct tape was hiding. Bolen was with her boyfriend, who is a KDPS officer and he held onto the intruder until deputies arrived.
When Bolen got a look at who it was she was stunned.
"I couldn't believe it, immediately I was like, so and so, I can't believe you would do this," says Bolen.
Bolen recognized the man as a coworker she's worked with at the Kalamazoo Post Office since October.
She asked deputies to check her car and they found a GPS tracking device attached to it.
And Bolen's neighbors say they were suspicious of a particular car in the neighborhood.
"Like late at night there would be a car that would drive back and forth down the street, kind of sitting off the side and my mom was telling me my sister would see a car and be nervous to walk to the bus stop," says neighbor Janai Holland.
And Bolen considers herself very luck to have had both her boyfriend and Oreo there.
"It could have gone a lot differently if I had been here alone like I normally would have been," says Bolen.
The suspect is scheduled to be arraigned Friday morning.
