WIND ADVISORY

10 AM Until 2 AM Saturday

The National Weather Service maintains a WIND ADVISORY for nearly all of West Michigan from 10 AM this morning until 2 AM Saturday morning.  45 mph gusts are likely inland while 50 mph gusts are possible at the Lake Shore.  This kind of wind is capable of bringing down tree branches and creating some power outages.  Obviously, we hope that doesn't happen.  Winds blow from the northwest this morning then from the north by midday and beyond.  Stay with wwmt.com for your weather today and always!

BATTLE CREEK, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - A wounded veteran is on a mission that involves fellow soldiers and a food truck.

Newschannel 3 spoke to Shane Farlin to see how he's trying to turn a small idea into a big success.

Farlin knows how it feels to have your dreams go up in smoke--these days, the soldier is stationed by a grill.

"I wasn't expecting to be out of the military; it was my career," Farlin said. "Everything I planned was based around the  military."

Farlin deployed to Iraq in 2004, but could have never predicted what happened just three months later, over Memorial Day weekend.

"We were in Baghdad; the streets were empty. It was very eerie," he recalls. "There was a scorch mark in the gutter; as I was leaning out toward the gutter, it hit me in the face,"

After losing his right eye, and almost losing his life, he returned home to Michigan.

He says those were some dark days, going through a facial reconstruction, dealing with PTSD, and on top of it all--unable to find work for four years.

"It's been a unique struggle," Farlin says. "I think things like that make you stronger, and build your character."

Farlin eventually convinced Hogzilla, in Battle Creek, to hire him on as a cook. Now, three years later, he's hoping to take it one step further, with a business venture both innovative and appetizing--a food truck with a purpose: hiring veterans and showing some TLC through BBQ.

"I know what it's like to go through these things and know what some of these guys are gonna be feeling coming home that can't find a job and can't find something to challenge them and maybe feel a little disenfranchised," Farlin said.

He has big plans for an old Hostess truck, and he hopes that enough people will hop on his crowdfunding page and help raise the $50,000 necessary to make it possible.

"If 50,000 people give us that dollar, it may not be a big deal to them, but it's going to be a world of difference for us," Farlin said.

There are just 8 days left in the kickstarter campaign.

People who donate get something in return, ranging from meal tickets to party packages, depending on the amount.
