SAN ANTONIO (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - History is being made in the NBA as the San Antonio Spurs announce the hiring of Becky Hammon, the league's first full time paid female assistant coach.

The 16-year WNBA veteran says she's ready to break through the glass ceiling.

The decorated athlete is no stranger to the Spurs. She shadowed the team in 2013 while recovering from ACL surgery.

Spurs Head Coach Greg Popovich said in a statement he's confident in Hammon's basketball IQ.

Hammon says she's ready to be treated like any other coach.

"It's never been about the woman thing, it's been about hey, she's got a great basketball mind and we'd love to have her, we think she'd be a great addition to our program," said Hammon.

Hammon takes on her new position immediately after she finishes playing this season with the San Antonio Stars.
