UPDATE: Suspect in custody, 911 caller sought after theat called in against school
BARRY COUNTY, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - A man is in custody Friday morning as Barry County officials investigate a tip involving threats at local schools.
It forced several school lock-downs early Friday morning and police are still inside Barry County schools patrolling the halls.
The Barry County Sheriff says they are trying to track down the person who called in the tip.
Meanwhile, sheriffs deputies and other local police agencies were out in force at schools in three different counties early Friday morning. Many school still have a police presence late Friday morning after Barry County Central Dispatch took a 911 call saying someone was going to attack a local school.
"About 2:34 this morning our 911 center got an anonymous phone call basically saying there was a specific suspect, they named him, saying he was high and was going to shoot up an elementary school in Barry County," said Sheriff Dar Leaf.
Police tracked the 50-year-old man named in the tip to a home in Delton where they spent hours trying to get him to the door.
At the same time they alerted schools in Kalamazoo, Allegan and Barry Counties to be on the look out.
Schools in all three counties went into lock-down mode as they prepared for students and officers were sent to patrol the halls and parking lots.
Shortly before classes started the man was taken into custody and the all clear given to schools.
Officials tell us they taken threats like this seriously.
Now the sheriff's department is working to find the person who made the 911 call to find out if they made a credible threat. If they called in a false threat that person could be facing charges.
The sheriff tells us police did find at least one weapon inside the 50-year-old man's house. They also found an active meth lab and a 3-year-old child.
He's now being held on drug and weapons charges.
They are still searching for the original 911 tip caller.
