World's Largest Swing Dance begins in GR
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) The Worlds Largest Swing Dance is back for the summer in Grand Rapids.
Nearly a thousand people come together every Tuesday night at Rosa Parks Circle, just to dance.
The Grand Rapids Original Swing Society holds the Guinness World Record for "Most Swing Dancers in One Place." They set that record last summer, with 756 people continuously dancing.
When we first started this we never thought it would take off to be the world's largest, says Mike Zaagman, a swing dance instructor.
Zaagman says swing dancing is the main focus, but other styles are explored as well, including salsa and tango.
Swing is a very simple dance, a very fun dance, he says. And even if you don't know what youre doing, you can come and learn. There are beginner lessons at the beginning. Everyones here to teach each other and just have fun.
Whether you're an old pro or have two left feet, you're not alone. The event caters to all ages and ability levels.
For about four years or so this has been the highlight of my week, says swing dancer Laura Kamper. Its unlike anything else you'll find in Grand Rapids.
Zaagman adds, I challenge you to show up and not have a good time!
Tuesday will be the first live music night of the summer season, featuring a 20-piece band.
Swing dancing runs every Tuesday from 7-10pm at Rosa Parks Circle in Grand Rapids, with live music once a month.
