Thrill-seekers try 'winter surfing' in northern Mich.

(NEWSCHANNEL 3) - When you think of winter sports, surfing probably isn't the first thing that comes to mind, especially in Michigan.

Apparently, December is a prime time to ride the waves on Lake Michigan, though.

Three dedicated surfers are regularly diving into the frigid waters in Traverse City for the sport they love.

Northern Michigan isn't exactly a popular surface destination, but these guys say it just depends on the time of year.

"Winter is actually the best time of the year to surf; it's when the waves are really good. You've got to come out in the winter if you want good waves," said winter surfer Nick Brown. "I mean, we get only one good day during the summer, but it's almost like every day in the winter."

While it sounds like the guys would freeze in the water, they have special gear that keeps them warm.

It may sound like an unconventional way to have fun, but these guys say it's just another way to survive the cold.
