Police clear streets after rioting in California
HUNTINGTON BEACH, California (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Police have finally cleared the streets after rioting took place late Sunday night following a surfing competition in California.
Police say nine people were arrested and more than a dozen were injured in the melee.
It happened at the Vans U.S. open of surfing in Huntington Beach. It's an eight-day surf and skate event.
Witnesses say it started when someone threw a ketchup bottle down on the crowd from the top balcony of a bar.
Crowds then threw bottles, tipped over porta potties and looted one store before police in riot gear moved in.
They used tear gas and non-lethal projectiles to clear the crowd.
