Leftover WWII mine safely detonated near Japan
JAPAN (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - A mine leftover from World War II, recently found off the coast of Western Japan, has been safely detonated.
Crews pulled the trigger Tuesday, creating quite a splash in the Kammon Straits.
The Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force says the mine was likely dropped by allied forces around the end of the pacific war.
They believe 4,500 mines were dropped around the strait during that time and expect to find and detonate many more.
