IRS to allow joint filing for same-sex couples
WASHINGTON, D.C. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Same-sex couples are celebrating a major victory from the IRS.
The government says gay couples who get married in states that recognize same-sex marriage can now file joint federal tax returns.
This applies even if they later move to a state that doesn't recognize same-sex marriage, such as Michigan.
The new rules come after the U.S. Supreme Court struck down part of the Federal Defense of Marriage Act, or DOMA, in June.
