Settlement in sexual harassment suit against mayor could include his resignation
SAN DIEGO (AP) - Attorneys for San Diego Mayor Bob Filner aren't commenting on whether a tentative settlement he has reached involving a sexual harassment lawsuit will include his resignation.
That's something that's been demanded by a chorus of fellow Democrats and a long line of women who say Filner mistreated them.
The city attorney says he can't divulge any details until the proposal is approved by the City Council, which could happen tomorrow. He had previously presented the council with a resolution to not pay for Filner's defense, and to countersue to distance the city from the scandal.
Steve Erie, a political science professor at the University of California, San Diego, says it's likely that Filner agreed to quit in exchange for the city handling his legal costs.
The public has seen only glimpses of Filner for the past several weeks. Meanwhile, a recall effort has started and women continue coming forward to say Filner made unwanted advances and inappropriate statements to them.
