Wildfire now 25 percent contained
CABAZON, Calif. (AP) - The wildfire burning 90 miles east of Los Angeles has expanded again overnight by about 2,000 acres -- but it's been significantly less active today. Containment has been increased to 25 percent.
The fire still covers 25 square miles, and a fire spokesman says the evacuations of a handful of communities are still in effect as a safety precaution.
Firefighters are focusing their efforts today on protecting the tiny community of Snow Creek. It's a shift from yesterday, when the threat appeared aimed at portions of the city of Cabazon.
The fire, which has been burning since Wednesday, has destroyed 26 homes and threatened more than 500 other residences -- forcing some 1,800 people to flee.
About 1,600 firefighters are on the lines, and seven tankers dropping flame retardant have joined eight helicopters in attacking the blaze from the air.
