Congressional report uncovers vast social security fraud scheme
WASHINGTON, D.C. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - A report released by Congressional investigators uncovered a vast social security disability insurance fraud scheme.
The report accuses a retired social security judge in West Virginia of scheming with lawyers to approve more than 1,800 cases from 2006 to 2010.
The scheme defrauded the federal government out of millions of dollars, and during a Congressional hearing, Senator Tom Coburn said about 25 percent of the $130 billion spent each year on SSDI goes to paying out bogus claims.
As National Correspondent Kristine Frazao reports, it's tough to root out such schemes.
