Mass. honor student suspended for driving home drunk friend
NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - An honor student in North Andover, Massachusetts is being punished for helping out a friend.
Officials say the student violated school policy when she drove home a pal who had been drinking.
Police got to the party a few minutes after Erin Cox. She was cleared by police and allowed to take her friend home.
But school officials were less forgiving. The senior honor student and volleyball player was suspended for five games and removed as team captain.
It's a move her parents and their lawyer say sets a bad example for other students.
"If a kid asks for help from a friend you don't want that kid to say I'm sorry I can't help you, I might end up in trouble at school," said Attorney Wendy Murphy.
"She did what she thought was right and I'm very proud of her," said Eleanor Cox, the girl's mother.
Neither the school district nor its attorney has released a statement.
The Cox family is hoping they'll listen to the gang of supporters including Erin's teammates who've stood behind her.
