20,000 head of livestock killed in storm
SOUTH DAKOTA (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Ranchers in South Dakota have yet to recover from a snow storm that hit a little more than a week ago, and another is right around the corner.
"My biggest fear is that people won't be able to recover. It's their way of life. They worked so hard. You pray for them and you hope they dig out of that, but that's a big hole," said Scott Reder.
State officials estimate as much as 20,000 head of livestock are dead, but that number is expected to grow.
Ranchers can't report their losses to the Agriculture Department because government offices are closed.
Relief programs that might offer help are part of a Farm Bill that has been delayed by congressional gridlock.
