3-year-old recovering from five-organ transplant

MIAMI (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - A 3-year-old boy from Miami, Florida is defying the odds, as he recovers after receiving a five-organ transplant.

Doctors say the transplant was a rare and risky procedure, but it was Adonis Ortiz's only hope.

When his mother Aracelis Ortiz was pregnant with him, she learned Adonis was developing a life-threatening condition that caused his intestines to form outside his body.

Adonis' only chance for survival was a never-before attempted surgery--a five-organ transplant.

After a six-hour procedure on Tuesday, the toddler now has a new liver, pancreas, stomach, and small and large intestine.

"He really is strong," Aracelis said. "After all his surgeries, he comes out with a smile."

Doctors expect Adonis to make a full recovery.

His family says they are grateful and have high hopes for the future.
