U.S. military base to be relocated

JAPAN (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Japan's government has given the go-ahead to relocate a controversial U.S. military base.

Okinawa's governor approved a proposal allowing for construction of a new base in a rural area.

The Marine Corps Air Base Futenma has been unpopular with the island's population because of crimes committed by Americans stationed there.

Relocation comes more than 17 years after the U.S. and Japanese governments agreed on the original move.
