Motion to stop same sex marriage sent to Supreme Court

UTAH (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - After court cases and appeals, Utah is taking its fight against same sex marriage all the way to the United States Supreme Court.

State officials have been fighting to stop same-sex marriages after a U.S. district judge ruled last week the state's ban on them was unconstitutional.

Same-sex couples rushed to courthouses for marriage licenses after the ruling.

Utah now wants the Supreme Court to order the marriages to stop after a lower court refused to do so.

When filed, Utah's appeal would go to Justice Sonia Sotomayor. She could rule on Utah's application herself or ask for the entire nine-member court to weigh in.
