Officer pulls man from burning car

LOS ANGELES (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - An off-duty LAPD Bomb Squad officer risked his life to pull a man from a burning car on the highway and cell phone video captured the nail-biting rescue.

Officer Donald Thompson was on his way to work when he came upon the scene.

He says the driver had crashed into the concrete divider and was slumped over, unconscious.

The crash caused the car to burst in to flames, sending up thick clouds of smoke into the sky.

Thompson unbuckled the man's seatbelt and tried to pull him to safety. Then a few Good Samaritans helped as Thompson rushed the victim to safety.

The man was taken to the hospital. His condition is unknown at this time.

Officer Thompson was treated for minor burns.
