Battle over satanic monument at Oklahoma capitol

OKLAHOMA CITY (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - A battle is underway in Oklahoma's State Capitol over a proposed monument by a satanic temple.

The structure is of a goat figure with children at its feet.

The temple is hoping to put it next to an already existing statue of the Ten Commandments.

While those in support call it religious freedom, opponents say it has no historical significance for the state of Oklahoma.

"The only reason why the Ten Commandments qualify is because at the capitol what we do is we make laws," said Rep. Paul Wesselhoft.

"America respects plurality, freedom of religion, freedom of speech, but it would also stand as a historical marker, commemorating scapegoats, the marginalized and the demonized minority, the unjustly outcast," said Lucien Greaves of The Satanic Temple.

Once the preservation committee at the state capitol receives the satanic temple's application they will vote on whether or not it should sit at the capitol in Oklahoma City.
