Utah lawmaker aims to keep married couples together

UTAH (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - A Utah lawmaker is working on legislation to keep married couples together.

Right now parents with kids under 18 who want to divorce have to complete a class before courts will approve the split.

The classes focus on everything from how to leave the kids out of arguments to how much legal fees can cost.

In 2008 another part of the course was added, which aims to convince parents they have still time to stay in the marriage.

Utah Representative Jim Nielson wants that part of the course to come up earlier in the process and not at the end.

Opponents say they are skeptical it will help.

The measure is awaiting approval from the house.
