Homeland Security issues warning over toothpaste bombs

(NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Security officials are on high alert for a potential terror threat surrounding the soon to start Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security issued that warning late Wednesday night.

They have reason to believe that terrorists may be trying to smuggle explosives onto airplanes using toothpaste or skin care products.

The terrorists may try to hide bomb-making components in those tubes. Then, once they're on board, they could assemble an improvised explosive device while the plane is in the air.

The security warning is for airlines flying from international cities to Russia.

Representative Peter King sits on the House Intelligence Committee and the House Committee on Homeland Security. He couldn't elaborate on the details, but says Americans should take this particular threat very seriously.

"But this is the type of threat that is very concerning. I can't go into the detail, but I can tell you that our intelligence people are working on issues such as this around the clock and also working with other partners around the world," said Rep. King.

Muslim militants have threatened they will attack during the Olympic Games. The State Department says these potential toothpaste plots will not prompt any changes to travel guidelines for Americans visiting the Olympics.
